Just Hold On

By: Kellye Smith

“‘Aren’t Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Couldn’t I wash in them and be clean?’ So he turned and left in a rage.”

‭‭2 Kings‬ ‭5:12‬

Isn’t it incredible how we convince ourselves that God acts in only certain ways? We bring our request to Him, fervently pray, and then assume the prayer is answered when the next steps we’ve outlined happen. I mean, the lives we live are so perfect and organized right? Why wouldn’t God take our blocking notes and move in our perfectly choreographed way? We have never gotten it wrong, right?

We want signs and wonders, which I fully believe God is still in the business of doing. But on the average day, I think His movement and His answers to our prayers are much simpler than that. They are a million practical little things in our everyday lives that move in such a way that the outcome happens in His perfect timing and will.

I fully believe this is why we miss how the Lord speaks to us. We expect Him to be in the great and mighty wind that tears at the mountains and shatters cliffs. We expect an earthquake or a fire, because these are grand displays of power—and isn’t that synonymous with our God? I believe He absolutely can be in those things. But more than anything, He’s the soft whisper. (1 Kings 19:11-12).

If we want to see Him move, we must spend time with Him and get to know every aspect of Him that He will reveal to us. Knowing this about God will pave a way to abundant hope when the situation looks impossible, with no option for a miracle. When we remember that God is not confined to our limits and comprehension, we can grab hope and hold on because we know that how we see and how He sees are two vastly different things.

Do not stop praying. Do not stop believing that God will move. Do not stop asking Him to stretch the confines of your imagination. After all, faith is the reality of what is hoped for, the proof of what is not seen. (Hebrews 11:1)

Just hold on.
